Hello wonderful subscribers!
Today I’ve got the winner of the BLOOD ROSE REBELLION giveaway, updates on some cover art, a new WIP, and wonderful ballet conservatory books to rave about!
I am looking for blogs to host a cover reveal for these, so if you are someone or know someone, let me know!
I’ve added another WIP to my list. I know, I know. I am not sorry. I’m working on a short story called “The Cocky Handlers” about a breeder and a handler at an AKC show with their cocker spaniels. Lesbian’ing ensues. If you haven’t heard of #cockygate*, well, you’re really lucky! An indie romance writer decided to trademark the word “cocky” for use in a romance book title, and also the font it was in in her book art*, and it’s having really bad consequences for authors who have already published romance books with the word “cocky” in the title and the creator of that font who definitely already owns it. So there’s a bunch of people now putting together hilarious punny books and anthologies. Including an anthology about people who own cocker spaniels. This is my time.
* All links are safe for work.
My poetry book is really coming along. I am still trying to get all of the poems organized. It’s really a story in verse and I really want to make sure that the arc is clear and engaging.
My short story anthology set in a shared world is also coming along! I’m putting some of the shorter stories to the side right now to really focus on the two that are most relevant to the plot of later books.
The novel has been pretty much untouched since last time, aside from me jotting down notes here and there. I am hoping to get back to that once some of the smaller projects are in a better spot.
I am looking for beta readers for all of the above! If you are interested, let me know! I don’t know when any of these projects will need betas, but I will send out emails closer to the date!
I devoured TINY PRETTY THINGS and then jumped right into SHINY BROKEN PIECES. These books were so good. I really felt like all the characters grew and changed and had great arcs. Characters who I thought I would be rooting for changed often, as did characters I hated. At the end I was very satisfied and if you’d told me at the end of book 1 what the ending of book 2 was I would have said “that is the worst ending.” But nope! SHINY BROKEN PIECES just destroyed everything I thought I knew and it was awesome. Contemporary YA is not my usual preference, but these books paired with DARIUS THE GREAT IS NOT OKAY are really making me realize I should look into contemporary fiction more often!
I also had a night where I could not sleep, so I re-read ELLA ENCHANTED, which I read in middle school and remembered loving. It was still pretty good, but wow there was some fatphobia in that book with regards to the evil stepmother and evil stepsisters. I also found out that there was a movie? It apparently sucked so I’m not gonna go seek it out. But according to Goodreads the biggest problem with the movie is that the people they cast as the step-mother and step-sisters weren’t fat. I’m actually 100% OK with that, because the books did a LOT of fat === evil.
My non-fiction book currently is Structuring Your Novel, as I am staring at my WIP and trying to get a sagging middle into something engaging and exciting.
Next up is Inkmistress, I am so excited to get back into that world and have more cute queer women!
The winner for BLOOD ROSE REBELLION is Liz Dueweke! I’ll be following up personally with the winner to get details on how to get the book to her!
The giveaway is still open for WINTERGLASS. Winner will be announced June 15.
The city-state Sirapirat once knew only warmth and monsoon. When the Winter Queen conquered it, she remade the land in her image, turning Sirapirat into a country of snow and unending frost. But an empire is not her only goal. In secret, she seeks the fragments of a mirror whose power will grant her deepest desire.
At her right hand is General Lussadh, who bears a mirror shard in her heart, as loyal to winter as she is plagued by her past as a traitor to her country. Tasked with locating other glass-bearers, she finds one in Nuawa, an insurgent who’s forged herself into a weapon that will strike down the queen.
To earn her place in the queen’s army, Nuawa must enter a deadly tournament where the losers’ souls are given in service to winter. To free Sirapirat, she is prepared to make sacrifices: those she loves, herself, and the complicated bond slowly forming between her and Lussadh.
If the splinter of glass in Nuawa’s heart doesn’t destroy her first. “A fairy tale, beautiful like an ice crystal, and razor sharp.” – Silvia Moreno-Garcia, World Fantasy Award-winning co-editor of She Walks in Shadows
_”Winterglass is rich with diamondine prose, a scintillant retelling of the Ice Queen that challenges [c]olonial mentality, and personal identity.” _ –Cassandra Khaw, author of Hammers on Bone, BFA & Locus Award nominee
This issue’s petpic is Melusina! She is a yellow belly ball python and she will be 2 years old this July! She is a very picky eater, and has a lot of anxiety. Here she is hanging out with me while I worked on the computer!
Small update - last issue I had Didi in my computer chair. Well, I went and got myself a new computer chair so she could have that one. It’s in the living room now and she rarely leaves it and is grateful she no longer has to fight me over it.
Thanks so much for subscribing! I truly appreciate it, and my pets love being gushed over on the internet so thanks!
